Why do muslim women wear hijab?

In recent years, a small piece of clothing has managed to cause quite a stir. Hijab is banned in most of the European countries including Turkey or Tunisia where islam is the dominant religion. Why then, under such circumstances, do Muslim women wear hijabs?

Types of islamic veils :

There are a lot of reasons why, but the easy, one sentence answer is, because they believe God has made it an obligation for believing women. In the Quran God tells the believing men and women to lower their gaze and to dress modestly. God specifically addresses women when He asks them not to show off their adornment, except that which is apparent, and draw their veils over their bodies.

(Quran 24:30-31)

While most Muslim women wear the hijab for religious reasons, there are other Arab or Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab as an expression of their cultural identity. By wearing the hijab, Muslim women hope to communicate their political and social alliance with their country of origin.

While some women might choose not to wear the hijab, most Muslim women agree that it is a woman’s choice whether or not she wears the hijab. Many Muslim and Arab women who have chosen not to wear the hijab are often staunch advocates of a woman’s right to choose to veil.
